Research Area:

The use of animal models to study the neurobiology of Alzheimer’s disease and the impact of chronic brain inflammation upon neurodegenerative diseases.  These models are used to investigate novel pharmacotherapies to slow the progression of dementia as a consequence of aging and Alzheimer’s disease.

Current Research:

We are engaged in preclinical studies of drugs that can provide neuroprotection from the consequences of normal aging. A variety of animal models are used to reproduce the neurochemical, pathological and behavioral changes that occur with normal aging or Alzheimer’s disease. We are presently focused upon the role of the endocannabinoid neural system and its role in controlling brain inflammatory processes. In addition, we are also characterizing the mechanisms of action of memantine, a glutamate NMDA open-channel antagonist that was recently approved by the FDA. A major objective of our research is to better understand the way the brain degenerates and then investigate drug therapies to slow or reverse these changes.
